This is a friendly reminder that our quarterly Golden Compasses Research Lodge stated meeting will be this coming Tuesday evening, May 1st at 7:00 PM. We are meeting at Natoma Lodge in Folsom.
We will conduct a short business session opening on the first degree. After closing lodge we will retire to the small dining room for discussion of our paper (please see attached) while enjoying dinner. Please feel free to bring your favorite drink to enjoy over dinner and during discussion. Soft drinks will be available.
We will have a casual discussion about the attached paper, "Symbol of the Seven Stars". Please consider preparing for this discussion through conducting a little research of your own about the "seven stars". A simple Google search will produce a good number of sites for you to look through. The discussion will be casual and open to both content, quality, and format of the paper. The objective of the evening is to exercise our critical analysis of research to better help us when we are reading original research and/or conducting our own.
Looking forward to the evening brothers and I hope that you can make it. I have added a few quests to our email list. Please shoot me a quick RSVP so I know how much food to purchase. There is no cost for the dinner however a donation is appreciated to help the lodge offset the cost.
Fraternally and Sincerely,
Master Golden Compasses Research Lodge.
I am attaching a copy of the paper that we will be discussing at our May 1st meeting. Please notice the date! I misread my calendar when creating our meeting schedule and have listed May 8 as our meeting date. This is the 2nd Tuesday and wit would be incorrect. May 1st is the first Tuesday of the month which is when our meetings are schedule. My apologies for the confusion.
Back to the paper, the paper I have chosen is a short read (4 pages) and is presented at a relaxed level of complexity. I have read some research papers and found smoke coming from my ears by the end of the paper due to the level of topic, sentence structure and vocabulary. I hope everyone finds this paper to be interesting and enjoyable however.
We will plan on discussing the paper with the idea of addressing the format, content, topic, and any other relevant material. I urge you to do a little research (Google search for example) on the symbol of the Seven Stars looking at the historical as well as any possible link to Masonry. This will help when addressing the content and merit of the paper. Also, while doing your searches, take note of the papers/articles that you may run across. Note the type of paper (opinion or based on facts with citations). Note the complexity of the research and also the complexity of the writing. Most people are accustomed at reading every day documents that have been written at a 6th to 8th grade level. While working in managed health care we were required by federal law to rewrite all of our documents at the 6th grade reading level. As such, when I run across papers written at higher, more advanced levels, I for one experience that sensation of smoke pouring from my ears as my brain overheats. Keep this in mind when reading articles as well as writing your own papers in the future. As a research lodge, and when doing our own writing, we may want to consider identifying our target audience and what the objective is when writing our papers and presenting our research. It would make no sense to write a paper of such complexity that only a few read it, thus missing our target audience. Certainly, there are occasions when more advanced research writing is appropriate such as when the target audience is within an academic setting or when the presentations are intended to be more on a scholarly level. As a research lodge I hope that we will have a nice cross section of for all to enjoy.
The evening will be a casual evening of open discussion and the objective is not necessarily to address this particular topic (The Symbol of the Seven Stars), but more of an opportunity to break into masonic research and discuss conducting research and the writing of papers in general. This article will simply serve as a point of discussion, although I do hope that you find the topic interesting.
I hope to see everyone at the May 1st meeting. We open lodge at 7PM, will conduct our business, and after closing lodge we will reconvene in the small dining room for dinner and discussion. As usual, feel free to bring a bottle of wine or other libation to share over dinner if you prefer, although it will be less formal without having a festive board. Also, to keep it less formal I plan of bringing in some pizza and side salads for dinner (not suggesting that deli sandwiches were formal).
Remember, in August we will have our first paper presentation by Brother Mike Perry and for November I am currently in discussion with Worshipful Freidson to co-present a paper together that we have been informally discussing for a few years.
As soon as I have more details regarding our July dinner event I will pass the information around.
Please feel free to invite other Masons to our meeting so spread the word.
Have a great weekend and I hope that you enjoy reading and researching the topic of discussion for May.
David Lagala, PM
Master, Golden Compasses Research Lodge
I am looking forward to your attendance this evening for our Festive Board. Please feel free to bring a brother or two with you along with a bottle of wine for toasting. We will be having a light meal of deli sandwiches and side salads.
I have attached the annual calendar for 2018 along with the 2019 meeting dates for your records.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
Happy New Year,
A brief update of Golden Compasses Research Lodge.
Several of the officers, elected and appointed have had other obligations develop preventing them from attending the installation on January 16th, next Tuesday. As such I will need to cancel our separate installation meeting scheduled on the 16th. Again, NO INSTALLATION MEETING ON JANUARY 16TH.
Our next schedule Stated meeting is February 6th at 7:00 PM. At that time we will hold our stated meeting and closed installation of officers. I have spoken with Wor. Allmuth and Gomez who both agreed to adjust their calendars for us. Thank you brothers. This actually works out better for many of our officers as well. INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS WILL BE FEBRUARY 6TH AT 7PM.
Following completion of some minor business and our installation we will close lodge and move into the small dining room for a light meal and Festive Board. I have attached a flyer. Please feel free to share the flyer freely. This will be a fun event with brotherhood, toasting, and a wonderful presentation on how to conduct masonic research by MW Brother John Cooper III.
There is no cost however donations will be appreciated to help the lodge defray any meal expenses.
Typically Festive Boards are filled with celebration, fun, and the toasting of many. Please feel free to bring a wine of your choice to share. Fruit juice/Sparkling cider will be provided. After consultation with our inspector, this is permitted since the Festive Board will not be taking place within a tiled lodge and lodge business will be closed at the time of the Festive Board.
Brothers, we are looking forward to a fun evening of celebrating Masonic brotherhood similar to the days of a bygone era. Please RSVP so that we will have enough food.
Fraternally and Sincerely,
Brethren, we had our last Stated Meeting for the year of 2016 and it was a very productive meeting. We held the election of officers and discussed events for the upcoming new year. Worshipful Dusty Deryck discussed the results from Grand Lodge. We discussed arrangements for the installation of officers. Many more interesting topics were discussed as well.
On another exciting note. Grand Master Heisner’s theme for this year, “Celebrating 300 Years: 1717-2017,” honors the tricentennial of Freemasonry – the first grand lodge was established in England on June 24, 1717.
Please spread the word and let other lodges know that we are always looking for active members and visitors to our meetings and events. If you know anyone interested in affiliating with Golden Compasses Research Lodge they can fill out the application and form by CLICKING HERE.
We look forward to seeing you all at the Installation of Officers and the next stated meeting.
Fraternally Greetings, Golden Compasses Research Lodge
